Cricket, is supposed to be a game of entertainment and that of sportsmanship. But in the view of recent events, the enthralling game has become more of a controversial game, if not less than a war of false egos on & off the field. On the ground, it’s our home players that have led the spirit of the game down, off it it’s our desi Netas who, not surprisingly, has made an issue of morality out of sheer entertainment.

Consequently & interestingly, the team franchisees may have covered up the issue with a little bit of more fabric, it is still impossible for them to calm down their players. After the Bhaji-Sree slap incident, the limelight was hopped in by the legends of international cricket, Sourav Ganguly and Shane Warne on the grounds of Kolkata Eden Gardens. Apparently Ganguly and Warne entered into a verbal spat after the former Indian skipper forced the umpire to refer a decision to third umpire. This led the Warne team idle for few minutes in the hot sun. Although the argument, like all other previous ones, may have been calmed down by the governing body, it surely leaves a question mark on the sportsmanship of the players.

What has been more active during recent games that have attracted more attention, is not the scorecard of teams, but incidents or rather accidents of sledging, abusing & arguments. It appears as if the transition of the game format from test to on dayers & now to 20-20, has brought along with it the short temperedness in cricketers as well. Or otherwise, the so called gentlemen’s game would not have witnessed the increasing number of such low-grade incidents.

It is true that competition is good for any game as long as it remains healthy. Incidentally the current scenario in the international cricket arena does not reflect any kind of healthiness in the competition level among national as well as international players. It can be argued that this is only a result of over hyped game that leaves it players in a do or die situation where everything seems fair enough to win the game. But what one must not forget is the fact that cricket still remains a game where one is bound to win while the other loose. What a player must not forget is the fact that his opponent is as strong as him and is fighting the same game with same zeal as his or may be more. Our players must try and learn to keep their emotions, especially hostile ones under strict self control as now alonwith their image it’s the young blood also that is connected with their behaviour. Youngsters today connect themselves more with the public image shown by these players, who are ideal for future prospective cricketers. Just like on-screen drinking & on-screen smoking influencing young blood of our country, bitter incidents like these also affect them at a slow but steady rate.

A cricketer, should therefore try not only to protect the spirit and taste of the game but also the future of his country and his game. A sportsman, nomatter which sports he or she belongs to, must not let the name of the game down just because of their incapability of controlling bitter emotions. They must also understand that its not they who are playing the game, it is actually the whole nation that plays with them ball by ball, and any controversy that happens with them, also happens with the nation as well.

Name any game that has remained aloof from controversies. Wherever there is competition, controversies would sooner or later find their way through it. At the end of the day, it is the competition which one enjoys and not the controversies. It’s not about controlling bitter emotions on the field that you call sportsmanship. The best in the world tend to go with the flow and it is not something they come planned with before the game starts. It just happens on the field and you cant help it at times.

The slap-gate has made one thing crystal clear. When HUMAN beings are involved in any sport of sport, errors will be commited, its just the spae and colour of it might be differnet in different scenarios. The Bhajji-Sreenath debacle will be remembered as one of the worst dispaly of sportsmanship... But hey, cant we move ahead leave the episode behind us?

This is happening because maybe we have given cricket a status more than just any sport deserves. Nobody watches cricket simply to enjoy the game anymore. As it gets more and more commercialized things of this kind are bound to happen. Over-commercialization creates its own kind of pressure on the players who can no longer take a game in the spirit of a game.

all these controversies are definitely to some extent robbing the charm off this much-loved game. and to think some of these controversies, like the slap issue, are so stupid and so totally unnecessary...

More than blaming the game, imho the media overdrive is creating all this hype and hoopla. the cricketers are always in the limelight, on or off field and this obviously gives the media ample fodder to harp on. It’s pretty pathetic to see even the most minor incidents being blown to outrageous proportions.

And they call this a gentleman’s game-ya sure! I would definitely love to see a rogue’s game if this were a gentleman’s game. I guess Bhajji should have thought about the team first and then about himself. Sree is young and restless. The slap is well deserved and must have simmered his temper and ruthlessness down.

I don’t really understand one thing, why Srisanth was not punished? He did say certain unpleasant things to Bhajji.
It was pathetic to see such pusillanimous guys first irritating people and then crying publicly after getting the obvious.

Even if he said something to Harbhajan, Bhajji’s behavior was uncalled for. Things keep happening in cricket but that doesn’t mean you vent your anger out physically on one of your team-mates. Sri cried because he felt hurt and there was nothing weird about his reaction to the same. Bhajji was thus deservedly punished and Sri deservedly warned.

Bhajji obviously had to be punished. But Srisanth also should not have gone scot free. He also has a record of indecent behavior. As far as crying is concerned I personally did not like it. People should have the guts to face such things if they want to enjoy by pricking others. But probably men capable of crying are in fashion nowadays! Soft & cool!

I seriously believe that there should be a serious debate over whether IPL is an international event or a domestic one. Secondly, if the Indian players are going to that much of extremism, why do they refer the indecent behaviors on field to the stand in umpires? And finally, it doesn’t make any point in blaming either Sree or Bhajji coz such things happen when money, fame, and aggression make you behave like a mad bull(though crossing one’s limits as Bhajji did is really shocking).

The format of IPL is just like European club football. It is enjoyable. But Professionalism is necessary. It is true and ironic that the entire nation rose for Bhajji a few months ago. Now no one can even defend him! Aussies must be laughing at us!

Jitaditya...For what should have Sri been punished. It wasn’t a punishment to be inflicted for their previous records on field but the slap spat in which Sri was innocent, he was warned and thats all that could have been done. And people should have the guts to face what! It is cricket and not boxing. Everybody has a word or two to say to each other in a dressing room, now whether it is good or bad, it doesn’t mean that they start slapping each other.

You believe that Professionalism is necessary and then you want to defend Harbhajan. The way they dealt with him was utterly professional. On the Aussies laughing on us for not supporting Bhajji; they would have laughed had the IPL committee or the BCCI spared him. They are professionals to the max and they would not laugh at something this serene.

Atul, Bhajji have had several incidents before this, but he didn’t go physical.
It is like Matarazzi provocating Zidane and getting him out to win the world cup. Only warning is too light. Should have got a couple of match Bans at least.

Again coming to crying it is just my personal feeling. You don’t have to take it seriously. I felt it was weird for a grown up guy to cry like kids.

Atul, you are misunderstanding certain portions. I am not defending Bhajji. What I am saying is because of his deeds Aussies will be laughing at us.
But yes Srisanth should also be punished

Thats because he probably couldn’t have gone physical with the likes of Symonds. I bet you, had he tried he would have surely had a couple of ligaments torn. It was just that Sri was his junior and he purely took advantage of the fact. He has been a class act with his spin magic for 10 years now and he should realize the responsibility which comes with being a public figure. In India cricketers aren’t mere players but public figures of great importance. This very fact made us support him in Australia and this very fact made the BCCI and IPL punish him.
